Ponta da Piedade from the Water: By Boat

To fully appreciate the intricate rock formations of Ponta da Piedade, book a grotto boat tour departing from the Lagos Marina. Tours vary in length, but most offer a relaxed pace, allowing you to soak in the beauty of the caves and arches while guides share fascinating stories about their history and names.

Before or after your tour, take time to explore the Lagos Marina itself. Stop by the fish market, where you’ll find fresh catches from local fishermen, or browse the nearby shops for souvenirs. The marina area is bustling and offers a great introduction to Lagos’ coastal charm.

A boat tour is the best way to get up close to Ponta da Piedade’s natural beauty, as many areas are inaccessible on foot. Guides navigate the grottoes with skill, giving you unparalleled views of the arches, hidden caves, and crystal-clear waters. It’s a leisurely, scenic experience you won’t forget.

Insider/Local Viewpoint:

We did the Blue Fleet’s Grotto Tour and asked the captain whether we should do the Benagil cave boat as well. She noted that we picked the best one, as once you get to the Ponta da Piedade grotto area, it’s a nice leisurely pace all the way through. The boat does a lot for starts and stops from the Benagil cave viewpoint areas.

Pro Tips:

  • Book your boat tour in advance during peak season to secure your spot. Still, don’t stress as a visit to the marina will yield you access to talk to salespersons for each boating company. They will all have tents set up.
  • Arrive early to enjoy the marina atmosphere or grab a coffee before your trip. There are bathrooms near the check-in point.
  • Consider a sunset boat tour for breathtaking views during golden hour.

Ponta da Piedade from Above: Hiking the Boardwalk

Exploring Ponta da Piedade from above offers a new perspective on this incredible coastal area. Park here, near the Miradouro Praia do Camilo to start your journey along the boardwalk trails leading to the cliffs. These paths are well-maintained and dotted with lookout points, perfect for soaking in the stunning views.

Take your time to wander the offshoot (unpaved) paths and stop at iconic viewpoints—you’ll find plenty of spots for amazing photos. One standout is the tunnel formation near the Miradouro do Abismo trailhead; it is a unique natural feature you won’t want to miss. Yes, we took the photo below ourselves!

At the far end of the boardwalk near the Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse, you’ll find some of the best photo opportunities of the dramatic rock formations. There is also a long staircase that leads down to the water’s edge. While we didn’t make it all the way down, the views from above were absolutely stunning. If you have the time and energy, we highly recommend venturing to this spot—it’s the perfect way to experience the beauty of Ponta da Piedade up close!

At this point, you’ll also find the restaurant Sol Nascente, where you can grab a simple meal or snack. It’s not fancy, but it’s convenient, and there’s a bathroom here if needed.

For a meal closer to your starting point, consider dining at Restaurante Camilo, which offers a wonderful view and a mix of bar and indoor seating. Indoor dining had a wait while we visited, but the outdoor bar allows food and drink orders and served our needs well.

If you’re feeling adventurous, descend the long staircase down to the base of the cliffs for a closer look at the water of Praia do Camilo (Camilo Beach). Just remember: the climb back up is a workout! Whether you stick to the boardwalks or explore the cliffs up close, you’ll be blown away by the beauty of Ponta da Piedade.

  • Wear sturdy shoes—the offshoot paths can be rocky but lead to amazing viewpoints.
  • Bring water and snacks and wear sunscreen, especially if you plan to explore for a while.
